A Yacht Purser requires a specific set of skills, to allow him/her to operate in an accurate and timely manner. Being able to work well under pressure and handle a variety of tasks at any one time is essential. Pursers must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as they will be dealing with the captain and head of departments, crew,  guests, management companies, and shoreside services just to name a few.

Understand The Role of Yacht Purser

A yacht purser is a high-ranking position that holds responsibility for tasks coordinated between the Captain, Heads of Department, Management Company, Owner/Charter Guests, Port & Legal Authorities, On Shore Agents, as well as other key players/services.

The position involves a great deal of desk/computer work and less crew interaction when compared to other positions onboard. With responsibility comes the need to manage time efficiently and make calculated decisions when under pressure. Owners and Charter guests make decisions that impact the time frame, location, and ability to source goods and services when required. Thinking and planning ahead while having the capacity to help solve problems that may arise from other crew/departments is key.

Although the Purser has the authority to make a certain decision with the approval of the captain, the crew are encouraged to consult their heads of the department first, in order to ensure that priority matters are being dealt with first.
